Islington Townhouse
A refurbishment of a 4-storey Grade II listed end-of-terrace house in the Canonbury Grove Conservation Area, in the Borough of Islington.
As listed building consent was required for these works, we were careful to protect the buildings’ heritage; only removing previous modern interventions to accommodate the new design.
Primarily an Interior Design project, the design objective was to seamlessly blend modern functionality with the classic aesthetic of the property’s period features. Existing materials rich in character and warmth helped to develop a colour scheme and material proposal. Exposed floorboards and slate fireplaces with marble surrounds formed a backdrop for the Little Greene colours and nature-inspired Pierre Frey wallpaper which lifted the elegance and sophistication of the interiors.
Even though it took a different design approach, the new material palette complemented the existing period features. The master bathroom featured beautiful, handcrafted Zellige wall tiles and terracotta floor tiles, with a large Critall-style shower screen, timber shelves and bespoke fitted joinery with panelled doors. In contrast, the lower ground powder room adopted a more vibrant, contemporary approach with terrazzo tiles and warm red painted walls offset with brass tapware. Overall care and attention to detail ensured a harmonious blend of history and modernity in every aspect of interior design.
