The creation of a self-contained apartment within a larger property in Mill Hill.
To provide accommodation for the client’s elderly parents, two existing bedrooms were combined to form a larger suite. Separate sleeping and lounge areas were demarcated by a central screen housing a home entertainment system and a multifunction ‘pod’ was designed to house an accessible shower room, a kitchenette and storage.
The pod was clad in series of vertical timber strips which unified the various functions, allowing doors and glazed screens to be concealed within the cladding’s vertical rhythm.
The shower room was finished in a waterproof cementitious resin, allowing the shower screen to be removed at a future date to create a fully accessible wet room. A glazed, frosted screen within the shower allows daylight in while maintaining privacy.
As part of an overall access strategy, a new lift shaft was also installed in the property allowing level access up to the new suite.
