Kentish Town Restaurant

A fit-out of a Malaysian restaurant in Kentish Town.

The brief was to redesign the space to maximise seating, introduce a new serving/preparation area, increase the toilet provision and replan the kitchen. Planning approval was also required to install a new shopfront and signage.

Working closely with the owners, Med Salleh London, Hatterwan developed a warm and welcoming design language that referenced the language and colour palette of traditional Malaysian shophouses. Details such as slatted shutters, decorative tiles and rattan-clad ceiling cladding were incorporated into the scheme. Ipe wood was chosen for timber benches and panelling for its warm, red tones.

Lighting was kept warm and intimate, with small spotlights and coloured glass shades. The owners dressed the space with objects which evoke a sense of nostalgia, including photographs from their travels and their childhood.

Another restaurant project can be seen here.
